You are not special

You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else.

Tyler Durden’s gift to working teams. The single most useful frame we’ve found for criticism that lands, and feedback that doesn’t sting: leave the sense of yourself as a special, gifted, deserving thing at the door.

This sounds harsh. In practice it’s a kindness. People who’ve quietly accepted they aren’t special can hear this is bad without flinching. They can say I was wrong without it costing them anything internally. They can let go of a bad idea before it becomes an identity.

The opposite — protecting the precious self — is what produces every untouchable bad idea, every silent grudge after a code review, every meeting where the obvious goes unsaid because saying it would mean saying it to someone important. We’ve worked in those teams. We’re done.

What this looks like in practice
